You are being told emphatically that you need to learn to listen with total awareness.  This is not just about notes.   For instance, when you look at a bird or a beautiful tree, you need to look without naming the bird or classifying the tree.  You must experience the entity completely without thoughts buzzing or gurgling in your head.  However difficult it may be to fully listen or openly look, you must learn to do it or there will be no liberating fire of awareness in your life; you will just go about with dullness in pursuit of petty little things of neurotic living and worldly ambition, which will wear you out over the years and ultimately put your body in the grave.  It will not matter at all what spiritual books you read or self-improvement practices you pursue if your consciousness is basically enclosed and dead. The fire of awareness must be kindled and fed.

Do not come to the next note session without some slight fire of awareness, however modest or little.   This is not a competition where you compare yourself to others.  This is your beginning of an important personal and private development of your conscious being.
