 Koan Four:
Questioning Huang Po

Huang Po was once questioned about the Mind Transmission:

Q: To whom did the Patriarch silently transmit the Dharma?
A: No Dharma was transmitted to anybody.
Q: Then why did the Second Patriarch ask Bodhidharma for the transmission of Mind?
A:
If you hold that something was transmitted, you imply that the Second Patriarch reached Mind by SEEKING, but no amount of seeking can ever lead to Mind; so we TALK only of transmitting Mind to you.  If you really GET something, you will find yourself back on the Wheel of Birth and Death.

Comment:

Seeking and Getting or Not-getting is causal activity and not Superconscious Mind or Self-nature.  This must be immediately and directly entered into by You at the time of Your decision.  It is not an intellectual conclusion to be achieved after a period of studying books on Zen as an accumulation of words and ideas in your calculating brain.  That is why Zen can be said to be headless as in the cutting off of meaningless thinking activity at a single stroke.  However, it is not known as to which “single stroke” will fell the tree of ignorance, so why not do Zazen and make each breath in and out a cultivation of non-duality, letting your body (the illusory “inside”) and your environment (the illusory “outside”) be as one?  By merging your consciousness with your breath and your breath with your consciousness, you are realizing Self-nature in each and every breath, but only when you are settled and aware of non-duality.

Superconscious Reality is called Void, but it is not to be confused with empty space between your body and your surroundings.  That space of body/world duality is illusion working in causal empirical consciousness.  The Space of Reality is harder than diamond.  Hence Superconscious Mind is also called the Diamond Body of Buddhahood.

In this way of Conscious Breathing, brain activity calms down and Enlightenment brightens itself.  Sudden (Consciousness) and Gradual (Breathing) become two edges of the Dharma Sword that cuts the root of causal birth and death cycling in Your ignorance.  When every breath is non-dual, the Fruit of the Way (Enlightenment) and the Seed of the Way (Practice) are the same, which is Zen Practice of direct supracausal realization.  Hence you are not Seeking or Getting in Zen Practice.  To be established in Zen Practice is already Enlightenment that is revealed more and more with each and every breath.  Luminous Diamond Space is Absolute Reality, Sanity and Innate Purity of Self-nature.

Sooner or later you must go direct in Self-nature beyond all your causal thinking, talking and behavior which are endlessly reflected in your disturbed, noisy and tense brain and nervous system.  That there is nobody to argue with and no causal achievement of relative miracle or perfection in Zen Practice is not a lack of anything You truly need.  It is only through the Vajrakaya Diamond Body that your Dharmakaya Truth Body, Sambhogakaya Happiness Body and Nirmanakaya Immortal Body are produced and maintained for your own personal certainty, fulfillment and freedom.  If you seek those three lesser bodies of Buddhahood as causal efforts and achievements, you will only produce further disappointments and troubles for yourself life after life because of Your ignorant attitude.  This is the Absolute Truth if you will receive it now.
